FORMER MINISTER OF HEALTH Branford Taitt has urged the Bajan government to implement the majority of the recommendations offered by a controversial report on the Legal, Ethical And Socio-economic Impact Of HIV/AIDS In Barbados.
Prepared by Professor E. R. "Mickey" Walrond, the report recommends the decriminalisation of prostitution and homosexuality and the issuing of condoms to prisoners.
Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, Reverend Joseph Atherley, said Government was unlikely to adopt the recommendations of the report, which go against a recent HIV/AIDS Commission finding indicating that Barbadians would not favour such moves.
Walrond retorted that the Government would rather see HIV/AIDS-related stigma and discrimination continue just to avoid losing a block of voters who oppose decriminalisation of homosexuality and prostitution.
