Rita Marleys film project sparks controversy with Jamaicans the world over.

Monday, June 19, 2006

Jamaicans are in uproar at the selection of Academy award winning actor Jamie Foxx to portray the reggae legend Bob Marley in a new biopic about the young Marley's pre fame life. The project has been harshly criticized for its proposed use of an American actor for this fundamentally Jamaican role. The brainchild of Rita Marley, the film will begin shooting in early 2007.

The Legend
I honestly think that Jamie Foxx playing Bob Marley is a rape on our culture. How would America feel if they got someone like Beenie Man/Sean Paul to play an American music icon?Trust me it would cause much controversy in America. Jamie did an awesome job in "Ray", not only cuz of his acting skills but the role was more credible cuz he looks and sounds like Ray. Someone said that Rita's motive for using Jamie is to make the movie mainstream. Damian Marley is suitable for the role cuz hes mainstream and he looks and sounds like Bob. Kymani would be a good selection too. Overall, a Marley is the best person to play the role cuz it would add more credibility and authenticity to the story. Mi neva like Rita from mawnin, from she did wah move him remains go a Ethiopia and now dis foolshitness, this jus adds wood to the fire. Yes Rita yu need to step the fucc off and let Bobs sons, handle the dealings of his life. Cuz you're making a mockery of him. Money hungry bitch. Tek yu backside bacc a Cuba.
Highly Bless

Y'ALL NEED TO QUIT MOTHERFUCKING HATING
I was born and raised in Jamaica so I feel as if I have a say in this matter. All you haters that's hating on JAMIE need to stop. He's an phenomenol actor and we all know this. If you Rita want to use jamie, guess what? She's gonna use jamie. The ball is in her hands and she's gonna shoot it whichever way she wants it.

YES! it would be nice to have a jamaican play the role, but let's admit it He might surprise the hell out of y'all. Anyway, that's my opinion. "ONE LOVE, ONE HEART, LETS GET TOGETHER AND FEEL ALRIGHT".

rita marley project
even though we all know that it would be better if one of bob marley's son play his role in his up coming movie , but we have to understasnd that america is where all the money at so if we want a share of that money we have to make the choice to have jamie foxx play bob cause that way all caribbean people and american people will want to watch it.not to mention that jamie foxx is one of america's favorite actors so that should draw attention to millions of people. i think it was a clever idea that rita marley came up with . god bless!!!

jamie foxx as bob
Greetings Blessed Heart of Love to ones and ones! I am not from yard, but I too am tired of seeing hollywood stereotype jamaicans and rasta children. Every role in media show every jamaican with dreads and as a drug dealer. Worse part, the actor got a bad accent. Fiyah burn!
It is not I place to judge, but I am a serious empress. How can Rita turn her back on Jamaica and now want to make money off her kingman name?
Why don't she give to her roots first, in jamaica. I know it is not I place to judge, but what are words without works? How can she not support jamaica and the rasta community by providing jobs, like the role of bob marley. If I have stated wrong facts, then pardon..Selah
Give thanx and many blessings to ones and ones.

Enough Watered Down Acts
I for one have had enough of these bad accents and portrails of my people. We are a very proud culture who have stood by and watch every one profit from our culutre in every way from move roles to our music. Does Rita go to an American owned restuarant when she wants a good Yard dish neither does the Americans. We have fine actors that can play Mr. Marley in his most esteem manor. I personally feel that Kymani, who is a good actor would take this role and bless it. He has proven this in One love.

It will be a reall shame
I feel very strongly that it will be a real shame to have Jamie play Marley. We all know that Bob would have wanted such an important role to be played by a jamaican, for whom he so strongly advocated. I have been waiting for a good mainstream film to come out depicting a jamaican figure, and the jamaican struggle, but this just ruins it. One of his sons would have been a perfect candidate, they have personal relationships to the role they would be playing, and would be able to replicate the nuances of their father better than anyone else, that is why Jamie was so good in Ray. Jamie has a personal connection to ray as an artist, not to mention Ray was alive for him to work with and learn those nuances that made the film so believable. Plus why not give a Jamaican a chance to step on to the worlds screen in a major way. I'm seriously dissapointed with this choice.

Dislike Rita's decision
To hell with Jamie Foxx he aint that good an actor if you have an argument aside from Ray he didnt do anything good, that movie was made for him he look like the guy, sing the same type of music. My concern is with how will movie directors and writers tell Bob story and his legacy, will it remain that which we know or will it be told as a they want to tell from their cultural perspective?

Rita hates Jamaica
No need to play around the topic.
Rita is Cuban born. What stake does she have in Jamaica.
She can screw Bob's Memory all she want using some (yes talented) R&B /comedian/actor to play him.
Sad to see that a country as talented as Jamaica so dependent on one man's image.
Maybe its time we support our new artiste and let the rise to Bob's level.
Straight up I feel one of Bob's son's should play the role.. But what do I know.

Misunderstanding?
I am empathetic to the Jamaicans that feel the role should be played by a Jamaican. However, you also want others to be aware of the Legend Bob Marley. To achieve this, the logical thing is to select an actor that is well established. Several have stated only "a Jamaican can play a Jamaican''.Mr Foxx played the role of a womanizing heroin addict though he hasn't used this drug in his past. You have to be able to portray many characters and identities. I'm not certain if he's the man for the job, but if the Marley children opposed Rita's decision, I think they would have added their input.

Is this last guy serious???
The only good role Jame fox has played was RAy Charles. Everything else he did, including the show, was very much over hyped. He is not a black actor to be respected. HE is not on par with Denzel, Samuel, Sidney Poiter,Etc. I think Rita should have chosen Paul Campbell (Third World Cop, Dancehall Queen, Return of Fire, ETc.)

This is wrong. She hsould not have chosen that little punk.

jamie as bob
Being a personal fan of Jamie Foxx i believe he's a great choice for the role of Bob Marley. Jamie is an artise of high quality and personally i don't think we (i am Jamaican) have anyone in Jamaica who can match up to the talents of the multi award winning artise, who is both singer and actor. Great choice of a person. Ryan

Bob Marley Role
Yes Jamie Foxx is a good actor and all but i think they should have chose someone else. Only because NO ONE CAN ME LIKE MR. BOB MARLEY..It's a hard role to portay especially since he isn't Jamaican. Jamie Foxx would have to eat, sleep, and breathe the culture. Him haffi speak like Bob, think like Bob, dress like Bob and everything else..But we gonna see how he does..Marley Forward Marley Pullup.

bob
I agree with most of the comments. She probably chose Jamie for money and great promotion. Although, as unrealistic and authentic as this movie will be it will spread the life and music of Bob to a new generation and continue a fan base for another odd years. Which is probably her ultimate goal. She has the right to his name being his only wife but should show some loyality to his fans and authenticate the movie.

I read the other comments people wrote on this wall, I can understand where they are coming from. I hope its not about the money because she already claims all the Marley merchandise in clothing stores.

Real Jamaicans
This is really a Big problem. I do not agree with how Jamaica is portrayed by people who have only been to tourist areas of jamaican and do not know what its like to be a jamaican. Bob marley has a legacy he spoke about politics and the good and bad of Jamaican. what does jamie fox know about that nothing. I am tired of seeing all these "how stella got her groove back, cool runnings" Fake jamaican actors. Jamaica has a lot of talented actors and musicians that can act and win an academy award. If Jamie Fox actually go through with this movie he is fool and I will watch it and laugh at him for making a fool of himself saying fake jamaican phrases such as "yah mon". This is just ashamed. Rita is always doing stuff just to get money. Just leave Bob marley and stop trying to ruin his legacy.

We/Dem/Us....
It would be so good if we understood that over 300 years ago, when africans were captured and dropped off, they were carted to jamaica AND the united states and there is a real real possibility that people from both of these places are related biologically and so the we and them thing is so sad to see written all of the time.

I think on this topic (Jamie being Bob), Jamaicans and Americans agree, it is a BAD SELECTION.

I agree with the writer who said, let us rely on his documentaries. No movie can do justice.

I dont believe Jamie Fox or any other non Jamaican actor can portray the legacy of Bob Marley. His legacy lies more than a few spoken patwa words. He is a movement, an era. I cant believe Rita is going to disrespect her late husband even more than she already has....Most people who are not aware of his legacy and his impact on reggae music and the world would simply think he is a brand of clothing and sneakers which I think is a shame. Bob Marley & Rita vs Jamie Foxx!!!!
If it is about Money go ahead and use Mr. Foxx. Hollywood is about Money anyway! If it is about "Spirituality" you will use someone that is suitable, anyway what the heck do I know, it is all about Money these days. Some "Rasta" just bun fire on people that have different sexual orentation or drinkers of White Rum, but when it comes to Money, they forget about what "Rasta" stands for; So we have to ask ourselves, are these the "Snake Rastas"?

It is just about making Money, this will have very little if any "Spiritual Value", it is like selling you Soul to the Devil. Sorry Rita, I love you, but I have to speak my mind, bad choice!

To everyone below making a big fuss
Jamaicans,
continue to voice your opinion regardless of what any American will say. Jamie played Ray and did a great job we agree. Let say Ray was played by Beenie man or Ninja man, yeah doesn't really make sense does it. That's all Jamaicans are saying, we were born into this culture and we've seen many bad portrayals of Jamaicans and Bob means way too much to us to see this get messed up. The choice doesn't seem right to us and we are not afraid to say it.

Americans,
Try to understand we love Jamie but we don't know if he can pull this one off. We are only voicing our initial opinions but who really knows Jamie could totally shock us and make us proud of his portrayal.

Let's wait and see?????????????

Jamie Fox as Bob Marley
If the Bob Marley movie is targeting a world audience then I think Jamie Fox may be able to pull it off, however, the Jamaican people finally get a movie to highlight an icon from there culture and I don't think they want to see the typical fake accent that sounds almost as if it was a mockery rather than a portrayal.

I dont know the reasoning behind choosing an actor like Jamie but I really hope it was carefully thought out. My opinion is, let a Jamaican play a Jamaican, it will bring authenticity to the role and Jamaicans will not only support it but they will be proud of it as well. Last but not least I dont think Bob himself would approve of this but thats just my opinion.

Never the less I will support it but I hope Jamie will not only captivate a large audience but be convincing enough to make the people of Jamaica feel proud by his portrayal of someone who is a significant icon in the history of Jamaicans and the world.

THE RIGHT THING
I dont see nothing wrong with jamie acting the part of bob marley. He is a great actor and bob was a great artist, so we only want the best to play the best. Sometimes americans do try to make a fool out of Jamaicans but they only can do that if we let them they are not more than us so why should we let them spoil something good. Its not Jamie that we are against, its the ways of the poeple whom he share his nationality with, dont let the Amaicans get the better of us show them it's them who want to be like us and not the other way around,so please just stop this conflict. We Jamaicans jump up ready to critisize someone who want to help us and that is always our down fall, we cant build up a better Jamaica if we continue like this we need to do as our motto says "all for ano and one for all". Jamie will only be representing Bob he cant ever be him and that is what we should remember. one luv

jamie foxx is a great actor, we all have admit that, its not because he's american, but its the stereotype that comes along with it. i love jamie, he is real good, but we jamaicans are so tired of being put down like we are good for nothing. (oh look out, the big screen is coming, no we cant use a true jamaican, lets use an american to ACT as one), it does not feel good. look people, i agree that jamie is not the right person to play bob marley. come on ya'll, look and listen, we jamaicans are talented people, rita CAN find someone to play bob, and someone who will put the right jamaican vibes, and speak our dialect the way it should be spoken. non jamaicans, no disrespect, but, ya'll wouldn't understand.

Robert Nesta deserves authenticity!!
No surprise Rita selected J. Foxx for the lead as Bob. She has in past years demonstrated a need to be a "show off". She is not considering a true character fit, just that Mr. Foxx is marketable, and academy award winner. He is extremely talented however a better selection could be made. A newcomer, or one of his sons would be a much better fit.

Rita doesn't seem to have faith in the ability of her own talented resources.

American born, growing up in Spfld, Ma., Bob's music shaped my life. I fully appreciate the upset vibes of the JA community. Honestly, by casting Foxx, I don't want to see the film. I fear it will be blastphemy and discredit an honorable man. When movies about Jesus Christ are made, casting finds individuals who provide the visual vibes, generally actors we do not know, so we can total get into the creation of the story. How ridiculus is Jamie going to look in a dreadlock wig from Spencers Gift shop.

Sad day.. As Bob would say, "Guiltiness, rest on their conscience"..

Respect!
Been reading some of these comments and coming from someone who was born in the states and who is part Jamaican.... I can feel both sides.. Respect to Jammie. I just hope that he looks at this as an honor. But, I can understand where a lot of yutes ah come from about someone who isn't Jamaican playing Bob.. Bob is a legend ya dun know! But, still show some respect to Jammie for this. I haven't seen anything yet. But, trust that Bob's sons wouldn't let this happen if they didn't agree with it.

Jah Bless!
