Haiti's Rene Preval speaks at the UN

Monday, April 3, 2006

Haiti's President-elect Rene Preval is urging the United Nations to focus on strenghtening Haiti's police force, rather than on the UN military mission there.
Mr Preval praised the performance of the UN stabilisation mission. But he believes its composition should be modified to focus more on the training of the country's police force.
The UN force in Haiti has 7,500 military troops with an international police component of 2,000 officers.
With only 5,000 ill-equipped officers, Haiti's domestic police force is struggling to maintain order in the often violent country of 8.5 million people.
