UNICEF says Haiti's child mortality rate highest in Western Hemisphere

Sunday, March 26, 2006

One in eight children will likely die before age five in Haiti, the highest child mortality rate in the Western Hemisphere, reports UNICEF.
Preventable disease, malnutrition, environmental decay and violence are among the main reasons why 117 children out every 1,000 will die before their fifth birthday.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, Haiti accounts for two per cent of all births but nearly 20 per cent of deaths for children under five, the report said.
The report blamed many deaths on low immunisation for infectious diseases. Only slightly more than half of children are vaccinated for measles in Haiti, a rate lower than sub-Saharan Africa.

Response to Mad as Hell
There is really no need to be upset. I think where you come from in Haiti may not be affected by this problem but how can you tell what part of Haiti the author is writing about. I am from Jamaica when i hear people say Jamaica is a "bad" country i cant disagree because i dont know where in Jamaica they are referring to all I can say to clarify that statement is that not all areas in Jamaica are so called "bad". Dont get mad at the author all you can do is find out the facts for yourself before you tear down what someone else says.

Selfish World
Can you all see what the greed of money is doing to man. They can't even look into their hearts and see the situation around them. Young people and babies staving for food. Yet we have so many resources and material goods throughout the world. it just makes me so angry that these nations are allowing these infants to die. Poverty is a crime. How ever you shape it because you are aloowing it to happen. Why can't all these nations come together. These leaders in the world are commiting a crime. No one in the world should ever go to bed hungry, not with all the food we have in the world. These people in the world are greedy and selfish people that need to answer to god when their time of judgement come.

OHHHHHHH !!!!!
This is soooooo wrong, I'm disgust, fed up of this selfish world we live in. Why and where is all that hate coming from and where it is going. I'm mad out of my skin especially at a news like this where my hands are tied and I can't make a wish to help people who are suffering. "Leaders " they're humans like you and me, why can't they look past the color of our/my skin. Children are my weakness , I get really upset to see them cry, suffer, are abused.

Do Something Quickly!!!
I don't think I can write a good story on this, TEARS is in my eyes, we are fighting Obesity in North America and Haiti Childrens are fighting starvation, we have to do something quickly, it is too close to home. Five (5) years old kids starving to death, that is not good. Poor babies, oh !! I hate to see you like this!!!

leaders do something
It is funny to me that these nation wide leaders know the stats of the morality rate in Hati and yet they can't do nothing to act on it. That is just as worst when you see a gunman shot someone and you told the officer that you weren't responsible but yet you had the power to do something at the time that might of pervent that person from Dying. This is the same senerio in this instance. Might as well consider these people murders becase they are allowing people to die when the have the power to chage what's going on.
