A high-ranked judicial official in Suriname confirmed the so-called Snake Heads, Chinese crime organizations involved in trafficking in persons, are conducting illegal business in the country. At the launch of a public awareness campaign regarding trafficking in persons Prosecuting Attorney Garcia Paragsingh told journalists there are strong indications about activities of the Chinese gangs in Suriname. So far no thorough investigation has been carried out. However several incidents involving Chinese immigrants claiming to be victims came to the attention of police and the judicial authorities. In recent years, thousands of Chinese individuals traveled to Suriname. A large number are allegedly being kept in forced labour and bondage under the most inhumane conditions.
