PASSA PASSA hits Grenada like a storm

Tuesday, March 14, 2006

As reported on BBC Caribbean Magazine, Grenada's Education Minister Claris Charles has expressed grave concern about the emergence of Passa Passa as a new trend on the Grenadian entertainment circuit.
Mrs Charles says Passa Passa - which has it origins in Jamaica - is not welcome in Grenada and has no place in Grenadian society.
I am hearing something called Passa Passa wich is creeping into the public. Its where persons are having dances and some young ladies are almost half naked.
"I think when we want to be monkeys, and copy other people we should copy the right thing. There is no merit in a young lady exposing themselves in public and letting a DVD be made of them. These things are reminiscent of Sodom & Gomorrah. This has no place in Grenada. Passa Passa involves crowds of music fans congregating late at night until the early morning in noted downtown areas to dance, chill out and vibe to music while street vendors provide refreshments.
Some musicians use Passa Passa events as a visual backdrop to their music videos, which has added to their popularity. American rap artists have followed suit when shooting promos in the region. This, in turn, encourages some attendants to dress up in the hope of being caught on camera.
Minister Charles went on:
I am appealing to everyone in Grenada: let Passa Passa pass Grenada by. This is one of the biggest problems Ive seen. When theres no decency in a society, the society can go nowhere. You have educated, indecent, persons with no value for themselves and therefore they have no value for other people and no respect. When you have no respect for yourself, you have no respect for anybody, and thats a very dangerous trend.

PASSA PASSA hits Grenada......... Part 3
By quoting Mrs Charles in her own words she states that "These things are reminiscent of Sodom & Gomorrah". I wonder if she is a church going person. If she is, maybe she should read more of the Bible before talking stuff she dont understand.... Mrs. Charles, let me educate you on Sodom & Gomorrah. --> In the Bible, Sodom and Gomorrah were two cities destroyed by God for their sins. Traditionally, the view has been that Sodom and Gomorrah's sins involved homosexuality (i.e. sodomy) and rape, and this view is stated in the Bible in the letter of Jude, verse 7. They were also accused of being "inhospitable." So my dear lady, PASSA PASSA have nothing to do with homosexuality or Lesbianism as I heard is quite legal Grenada.

PASSA PASSA hits Grenada........ Jasmin @ Canada
Jasmin @ Canada sorry I did not reply earlier. Yes I am a Man........ hahaha....... wonder why you asked in the first place. I love street dance because I am from Jamaica and unlike north america it is a form of free speach. when it comes to party, the Islands is where its at because no one is afraid to "skin out and shock out"...........

PASSA PASSA hits Grenada......... Part 2
Now if she want to speak about "some young ladies are almost half naked" she must be careful how she phrase her words because when every Caribbean Island have Carnival the Ladies and also Men are not wearing nothing at all except for a piece of cloth covering their chest and genital areas...... And Carnival time is proven to be the highest time for LOOSE SEX documented.
So my dear Lady....... if you gonna try to stop dress code PASSA PASSA (STREET DANCE) You should try to correct the dress code first in your Carnival party which happen every year....... Try to remember that you was also young once upon a time and liked going out to Party. And dont try to fight the developement of YOUNG PEOPLE PARTY that is used to help them stay OUT OF TROUBLE.

PASSA PASSA hits Grenada......... Part 1
PASSA PASSA......... Translation (STREET DANCE). I cannot see how the dress attire of a Party, Carnival or even a gathering offends some people......... "Mrs Charles" should check her Black people history first before passing judgement on a part of Black People History that she might dont understand.
Black people have been in near to no clothing at all their whole life........ hence the African heritage........ and the music has been a part of our life from the biggining of time......... when we have a street party it is customary to wear what you feel comfortable in no matter what the other countries of the world or other island says.

Understanding Passa Passa for Dummies Cont'd
In the eighties, the then JLP introduce things like "The Noise abatement act" to ensure they Kids would be home early.
by the Late 90's Things got so violent, that Dance were Now Peace dance.

I Left this Island in the mid 90's so I do not know much but what I know is that Elephant man and a few others revive this spirit with "pon The River "and a slew of its.
Carnival is now the Main Road dance but things like FAME Road party and Passa Passa Hold Their Own.

If You do not Know even the slightest Fact How can you say its for sluts?

We are too quick to condem and convict but understand this.Black People have always become excited by Music,Thats why in Africa Drums are still the best instrument.

Understanding Passa Passa for Dummies
I remember my first book for dummies.

Passa Passa develop from the street dance culture by Sounds such as Jah Love,Killamanjaro,Scorpio,Stone Love and Inner City Disco.
Later on Sounds like Silver-hawk , Travellers,Roadstar and Gemini carried on this tradition where they would Play on one day of the Week

This Was a great way of socialising the down-town and Uptown Kids who would steal out From their Parents and learnt the Latest dance, such as the shakes, ska and other Dance

DON'T STOP DANCING
What is the difference with Passa Passa than a regular night club or lounge. One thing I don't like is seeing the young children in the clubs rubbing shoulders with the grown ups. Before bannig Passa Passa; first start with the guns, drugs, racism, poverty. The people can't change the wrongs of this mean world; why not dance it off and "buss a sweat' while yu at it. I enjoy myself; but personally, I don't get down like that ( the female on the picture). If I dance with a man, he can't hold me inappropriately and as soon as the slow jams come on, "That's it".

To Me@!! Rasta Man
When you write I know it is you ,even though I dont know where you are writing from. I can find out if I want to but I wont do that. Now the Rastafarian religion can also be complicated if you are not exposed to it closely. The building that I am living in has a number of Rastafarians living here too. Some are from Ethiopia, so I get to see the religion from a different prospective. Mybe we can share our ideas on line, so that other people can understand Rastafarians more. I have a number of Rastas in my family too and one of my best friend is a Rasta.

Continue /Passa Passa vs Sodom & Gommorrah
I can't see how this could relate to Sodom and Gomorrah. This is a street dance. No father is going to have sex with their daughter (Lot did!). I wont get into the Sodom & Gommorrah story any further, it is too controversial and is not suitable for this forum for discussion.Anyway Passa Passa is similar to other Carnival elsewhere.

Respect The Lord Respect Yourself
How many of you believe in the Holy Father Jehovah and his standard of righteouness? To the passa passa activist crew, this is a big abomination in the sight of the Lord.Lets be real and true ok,passa is just one big orgy night.i know what it is 2 carry on like that.its just not fun and dancing.i know what it is to desire nothing more but satisfy my penis, grope a sexy looking girls body, her breast, her hips, touch her vigina and ultimately sex her.Thats what its all about hello somebody!!People repent and all will be well with you.God bless.Jesus loves you!!

Naked bodes rubbing together Catches Fire in Grenada
i have seen tribal dances being performed in Africa and the ladies are top less jumping up and down and it was like i was doing some thing wrong by watching them. it all comes down to moral now a womans body is a beautiful creation and some may go the extra length to make another see how beautiful it may be, now how they go about doing it may be debated . i wander if the ladies were dressed like Nuns who would it please. The conception is once there is flesh the Devil is the dog waiting to bit it (there for making it a sin). And too believe they told me a story of man and a woman being in a Garden with nothing on. Who wrote the book on moral, when the good Lord made us naked.
