Full Court to determine whether 'drug kingpin' accused can get fair trial in US

Monday, October 3, 2005

Jamaica's Supreme Court will begin a hearing this week on whether a Jamaican national declared a 'drug kingpin' by the American president can be assured of a fair trial if he is extradited to the U.S.
The U.S wants Montego Bay businessmen Leebert Ramcharan and Donovan "Plucky" Williams, to answer drug trafficking charges. The two were ordered extradited more than a year ago by a Kingston magistrate, Martin Gayle. But they asked for a judicial review of the June 2004 extradition order.
It is expected, too, that the hearing will skirt - if not fully delve into how constitutional is Jamaica's extradition law itself.

Leebert Ramcharan (left) is being escorted to court in Kingston in 2004. Ramcharan was designated a drug kingpin by US president George W Bush
Donovan 'Plucky' Williams (right), escorted by a policeman, is about to enter the Corporate Area Magistrate's Court in 2004. Williams is fighting an extradition order to the United States.

Drug King Pin
I think Jamaica needs to be more like Mexico and let the drug dealers keep the money in jamaica. Selling drugs is wrong but why should jamaica give all the assets to the U.S. If anything is going to be seized by the government then it should be jamaica getting it.
